Formed in Chicago in 1996, Disturbed is an American heavy metal band known for their powerful music and compelling vocals. The band’s lineup consists of vocalist David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist John Moyer (who joined in 2004). Disturbed rose to fame with their debut album The Sickness, which includes the hit single “Down with the Sickness.” Their sound is characterized by a blend of hard rock and heavy metal with complex guitar riffs and robust rhythm sections. Over the years, Disturbed has released seven studio albums, with several reaching number one on the Billboard 200. The band is also known for their dramatic reinterpretations of classic songs, most notably their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.”

Dan Donegan

Dan Donegan, a founding member of Disturbed, has played a significant role in shaping the band’s sound with his distinctive guitar playing and electronic programming. He has been with the band since its formation in 1996 and has contributed to all their albums. Donegan’s guitar work is marked by heavy riffs and melodic solos, pivotal in songs like “Stupify,” “Stricken,” and “Indestructible.” Outside of Disturbed, Donegan has kept a relatively low profile, focusing much of his musical energy on the band.

Mike Wengren

Mike Wengren, another original member, is the drummer and co-founder of Disturbed. His aggressive drumming style is essential to the band’s sound, characterized by powerful beats and complex rhythms that are evident in tracks like “Down with the Sickness” and “Ten Thousand Fists.” Wengren has also contributed to the writing process for many of the band’s songs. Beyond Disturbed, he has participated in side projects that explore different musical styles, though Disturbed remains his primary focus.

David Draiman

David Draiman joined Disturbed in 1996 and quickly became a central figure due to his unique vocal style, which includes distinctive staccato bursts and a broad melodic range. Draiman is also the band’s primary lyricist, infusing the music with themes of conflict, self-reliance, and the human condition. His powerful voice and dynamic stage presence have made him one of the most recognizable figures in metal today. Outside of Disturbed, Draiman has worked on industrial metal projects and has been active in advocating for music streaming reform.

John Moyer

John Moyer joined Disturbed in 2004 as the bassist, after the departure of Steve “Fuzz” Kmak. Moyer’s debut with the band was on their third album, Ten Thousand Fists, which saw the band solidifying their sound with more complex arrangements and deeper lyrical content. Moyer brought a new energy to the band, both with his skilled bass playing and his backing vocal abilities. Apart from Disturbed, he has been involved with other bands such as Adrenaline Mob and Art of Anarchy, showcasing his versatility as a musician.

Erich Awalt

Erich Awalt was briefly associated with Disturbed as their lead vocalist before David Draiman took over the role. Awalt’s tenure with the band was during its early days when they were still known as Brawl, a precursor to what would eventually become Disturbed. His time with the band was short-lived and did not lead to any album recordings under the Disturbed name. After parting ways with the group, Awalt faded from the mainstream music scene, and there is limited information on his musical activities following his departure from Brawl.

Steve “Fuzz” Kmak

Steve “Fuzz” Kmak was the original bassist for Disturbed, joining the band at its inception in 1996 and playing on their first two albums, The Sickness and Believe. His bass playing contributed to the foundation of Disturbed’s heavy, aggressive sound that characterized these early releases. Kmak’s performance on tracks such as “Down with the Sickness” and “Prayer” showcases his ability to blend seamlessly with the band’s dynamic rhythms. He was known for his energetic stage presence and backing vocals that complemented the band’s performances.
