Huey Lewis & The News is a rock band that was formed in 1979 in San Francisco, California. Emerging from the remnants of earlier projects such as Clover and Soundhole, the band solidified its lineup with Huey Lewis as the lead vocalist and harmonica player, Sean Hopper on keyboards, Bill Gibson on drums, Johnny Colla on saxophone and guitar, and Mario Cipollina on bass. Over time, the group became known for its tight musicianship and ability to blend rock, pop, and soul influences seamlessly.
The band released ten studio albums between 1980 and 2020. Their self-titled debut in 1980 gained modest attention, but their breakthrough came with Sports (1983), which became a multi-platinum success, featuring hits like “The Heart of Rock & Roll” and “I Want a New Drug.” This was followed by the chart-topping Fore! (1986), which further cemented their status as one of the most popular acts of the 1980s. Hits like “Hip to Be Square” and “Stuck with You” became staples of the era. Their music was also featured prominently in the blockbuster Back to the Future (1985), with “The Power of Love” earning the band an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
Huey Lewis & The News achieved significant commercial success, with multiple platinum-certified albums and a string of Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. They received a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best Music Video, Long Form, for The Heart of Rock & Roll. Their ability to create accessible, hook-filled songs made them a defining act of the 1980s and a lasting influence in the pop-rock genre.
The band’s history is one of adaptability and perseverance, as evidenced by their later work, including the album Weather (2020), despite challenges such as Huey Lewis’s diagnosis of Ménière’s disease, which affected his hearing. Their legacy is underscored by their contribution to shaping the sound of 1980s rock and their continued relevance in music history.
