The Neighbourhood formed in 2011 in Newbury Park, California, and quickly made waves with a sound that fused atmospheric alternative rock, indie pop, and R&B-inspired vocal stylings. The founding lineup featured vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis. Early recordings like the I’m Sorry… and Thank You EPs gained them a dedicated following online, prompting Columbia Records to sign them for their debut full-length release. That debut, I Love You., arrived in 2013 and introduced the band’s black-and-white visual identity alongside a brooding yet melodic sound.
The album’s breakout single, “Sweater Weather,” became a cultural phenomenon, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually going multi-Platinum. It remains the band’s most iconic song and experienced a second wave of popularity nearly a decade later through streaming and social media platforms. The track’s success helped I Love You. become a defining alt-rock release of the 2010s, placing the band firmly in the mainstream spotlight. They followed this momentum with The Love Collection EP and their genre-blending 2014 mixtape #000000 & #FFFFFF, which explored more experimental territory.
In 2015, they released their sophomore studio album Wiped Out!, further refining their signature sound and aesthetic. The album featured songs like “Daddy Issues” and “R.I.P. 2 My Youth,” both of which became fan favorites and highlighted the band’s ongoing lyrical exploration of vulnerability, detachment, and personal identity. Around this time, drummer Bryan Sammis left the band and was replaced by Brandon Fried. This period also saw the band embrace increasingly conceptual visuals and minimalist branding, reinforcing their distinct position in the alternative landscape.
Their third studio album, the self-titled The Neighbourhood, arrived in 2018 following a string of EPs—Hard (2017), To Imagine (2018), and Hard to Imagine—which were later compiled into a full-length collection titled Hard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing. This phase of their career reflected their willingness to build worlds across multiple releases, rather than confining themselves to traditional album cycles. Tracks like “Scary Love” and “Stuck with Me” expanded their musical palette while maintaining the emotional intensity fans had come to expect.
In 2020, the band released their fourth studio album Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones, a concept-heavy project centered around a fictional alter ego created by Jesse Rutherford. The record featured songs such as “Cherry Flavoured” and “Lost in Translation” and was praised for its bold aesthetic shift and polished songwriting. This era signified a deliberate attempt to step outside the band’s established image and experiment with theatrical performance and identity-driven narrative.
While The Neighbourhood never won major music industry awards, their cultural impact was undeniable. Their ability to seamlessly blend genres and project a cohesive visual identity earned them a fiercely loyal fanbase and long-lasting relevance in both indie and mainstream circles. Their success can be measured not only by sales and streams, but by the number of younger artists citing them as an influence.
Outside of the band, Jesse Rutherford pursued solo projects and fashion collaborations, expanding his artistic footprint. The group also left a notable mark on fashion culture through their commitment to monochrome aesthetics and minimalist branding, making them as recognizable for their look as for their sound. Their music has been featured in film and television, further cementing their place in pop culture.
In February 2022, The Neighbourhood announced a hiatus, putting the band on pause after more than a decade of creative output. While it remains unclear whether the hiatus is permanent, their catalog and cultural influence continue to resonate with listeners discovering their work anew across digital platforms.
