Teddy Swims built his musical identity in Conyers, Georgia, where his early exposure to soul and theatrical performance laid the groundwork for a genre-defying career. Born Jaten Collin Dimsdale in 1992, Swims initially balanced high school football with a deepening interest in musical theater and choral performance. He credits both his father, who introduced him to classic soul artists like Marvin Gaye and Al Green, and a high school teacher who encouraged him to explore his vocal talent. His formative years were shaped not only by stage roles in musicals and Shakespeare plays but also by a growing obsession with mastering different vocal styles through online videos.
Before launching a solo career, Swims spent nearly a decade performing with Atlanta-based bands across a wide spectrum of styles, including alternative rock (WildHeart), post-hardcore (Eris), hair metal, and R&B/soul (Elefvnts). His artistic versatility was further amplified when a collaboration with producer Addy Maxwell led to an opening slot on Tyler Carter’s 2019 U.S. tour. Around that same time, Swims began posting genre-spanning cover songs on YouTube, with his first video—Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You”—uploaded in June 2019. His reinterpretation of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” gained viral traction, amassing over 160 million views, which dramatically expanded his audience and marked a turning point in his career.
Swims released his debut EP Unlearning in 2021 under Warner Records, followed by his second EP Tough Love in 2022, which became his first release to chart on the Billboard 200. His momentum culminated with the release of his debut studio album I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 1) in September 2023. The album featured the breakthrough single “Lose Control,” which climbed into the top ten in several countries and eventually reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024. The song’s success marked Swims as a formidable voice in modern soul-pop and R&B, while the album demonstrated his capacity to weave together vulnerability and polished pop craftsmanship.
In addition to the viral popularity of his YouTube covers and the chart-topping success of “Lose Control,” Swims has drawn acclaim for his live performances, known for their emotional resonance and vocal strength. He’s headlined multiple national and international tours and served as a supporting act for artists across different genres, reflecting his wide appeal. In early 2024, MTV named him “Push Artist of the Month” for February, a recognition of both his commercial rise and growing industry credibility.
Swims’s authenticity and willingness to open up about mental health struggles have helped him cultivate a loyal fanbase. The title of his debut album directly alludes to personal experiences with therapy, and his lyrics often address emotional complexity, loneliness, and resilience. Outside of music, he’s been recognized for his charitable efforts and community involvement, often using his platform to promote awareness for mental wellness and to celebrate inclusivity and individuality.
As of 2024, Teddy Swims has released one studio album and three EPs, including Unlearning, Tough Love, and Sleep is Exhausting. He continues to work on I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 2), signaling that his creative momentum remains in full swing. With his unique voice, multi-genre appeal, and candid personal storytelling, Swims has emerged as one of the most distinct and emotionally resonant new artists in popular music.
