IGGY POP Premiers “Modern Day Ripoff” Video From Upcoming Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 2023 Release

IGGY POP Premiers

Iggy Pop will release Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 2023 on January 24 via earMUSIC on Blu-ray+CD Digipak, 2LP (Black) Gatefold and Digital Download.

“Modern Day Ripoff” (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023) is the new single from the upcoming release. Watch the official video below, stream/download the single here, and pre-order the album here.

On July 6, 2023 Iggy Pop returned to the Montreux Jazz Festival backed by a seven-piece band and thrilled a capacity Stravinski Auditorium crowd with a career-spanning set including tracks from his time with The Stooges, his Idiot and Lust For Life albums, New Values leading up to his recent release Every Loser.

There has never been an artist on stage quite like Iggy Pop and here he has never been better. With a band as versatile and acrobatic as the artist himself, there is everything from the glorious primitivism of Stooges-era “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “T.V. Eye”, the swagger of “Lust For Life”, the precise metronomic drone of ‘Nightclubbing”, and the full-on unleashed rock fury of the recent “Modern Day Ripoff” and “Frenzy”.

“I give something extra every time I do Montreux Jazz. In ’23 it was deep cuts like ‘Mass Production’, ‘Endless Sea’, ‘Five Foot One’ and a hell of a lot of sweat.” – Iggy Pop

This most comprehensive live collection catches up with Iggy as he continues to win over generations of new fans and perform at the highest level his lifelong devotees have come to expect.

It marked Iggy’s third appearance at the festival and his monumental performance was recorded and filmed by the Montreux Jazz Festival team.

WOLFHEART Recall 2024 Draconian Darkness Touring Leg With “Burning Sky” Live Video

WOLFHEART Recall 2024 Draconian Darkness Touring Leg With

Wolfheart have unveiled an evocative music video for “Burning Sky”, a single from their latest album released on September 7, 2024 via RPM. This release coincides with their extensive Draconian Darkness tour across Finland, other parts of Europe, and Saudi Arabia.

The Finnish melodic death metal band’s tour has been a monumental part of their journey, taking them through familiar and uncharted regions to perform their intensely melancholic tunes. The video serves as a visual recap, highlighting the tour’s most memorable moments for those who attended the live shows and those yet to see the band live.

“Our latest European tour was definitely one for the books in our career and it just felt right to shoot footage from several shows during the tour. Measured in all ways, it was the most successful tour and it was profoundly amazing to get to play new songs from Draconian Darkness live and to see the fantastic reactions of the audience night after night,” recalls vocalist/guitarist Tuomas Saukkonen.

“Burning Sky” starts with a stirring acoustic guitar intro that gradually builds anticipation. It seamlessly transitions into the band’s signature heavy sound, progressing the dynamic tune step by step. Pounding drums then abruptly awaken listeners from their serene reverie, transforming the song into a powerhouse exemplar of fierce Northern metal majesty.

Watch below:

Draconian Darkness was recorded at Deep Noise Studios and produced, mixed and mastered by the band’s long-time collaborator Saku Moilanen; its artwork was crafted by Nikos Stavridakis (VisionBlack). Order/stream the album here.

Rusty Williams, the 78-years-old grandfather of Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams, is to release his debut album next month.

The songs on the album, titled Grand Man, were recorded by Williams senior between 1972 and 1983, but were never released, and his grand-daughter was apparently unaware of their existence until relatively recently. Having had the chance to hear the recordings, Paramore’s frontwoman pledged to help her grandad get the album into the public domain, and it will emerge on her bandmate Zac Farro’s Nashville-based record label Congrats Records on February 14.

The release is preceded by the record’s first single, its opening track, Knocking (At Your Door), which one YouTube commentator has already pronounced “fire as fuck!”

Speaking about his songs finally being scheduled for commercial release, Rusty Williams admits, “I didn’t expect anything, and I’m too old to be famous. But I just want to know someone liked what I did, and to be touched by whatever the hell they are listening to. I want people to see how it felt when things were real.”

The album tracklist is:

1. Knocking (At Your Door)
2. Can’t Stay Away
3. Angel Eyes
4. Wanted
5. Fade Away
6. If Only For A While
7. Never Gonna Stop
8. Lovers Only Come And Go
9. Every Time I’m High

11. Riverboat Gambler
12. Someone Who Happened To Me

Punk rock lifer and underground legend John Reis has announced a new record from Swami John Reis, and shared its first single.

Available now on streaming services, Fed To The Dogs serves as a preview for what to expect from Time To Let You Down, which is scheduled for release on March 21 via Swami Records.

Reis, a cult hero thanks to his work with Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, The Night Marchers, Sultans, Plosivs, Swami & The Bed Of Nails and more.

A press statement introducing the album describes Time To Let You Down as “a savage blast of junk shoppe punk that kicks you in the ding ding” and “chock full of fist pumpers, head bumpers, stinky dumpers, meaty thumpers and toe stumpers.”

“The tempos are often breakneck and the dense arrangements tumble like bricks into hot cheese,” it continues. “The undeniable sonic girth barges at will into lathered ear tubes allowing these barbaric anthems to echo in hollow domes.

“Feel the whip crack break skin on the acne scarred backs of our cultural oppressors. The sound is tough. The songs are a bitch. Incite your expectations with the single Fed To The Dogs. Salty leather and wobbly chain link fences can’t contain its rebel intent.”

Lovely stuff, and quite the teaser.

In 1987, as they exploded into global consciousness with their wildly successful debut album Licensed To Ill, the first rap album to hit number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, the Beastie Boys were portrayed as the most outrageous, obnoxious and offensive band ever spawned, a threat to decency, morality and the very fabric of Western civilisation. Their parents, however, knew the truth: far from their self-mythologising image as ‘the nastiest group in the world’, Mike D (Michael Diamond), Ad-Rock (Adam Horowitz) and MCA (Adam Yauch) were just sweet, smart, and polite upper middle class Jewish kids from Manhattan having the best time of their lives.

In April 1987, [now defunct] British music magazine Q sent writer Lloyd Bradley to join the Beastie Boys on the road in the US. Not only did he get to spend time with the trio in their hometown, but he also got to hang out with Yauch and Diamond’s parents, who sought to reassure concerned parents across the world that they had absolutely nothing to fear where their offspring were concerned.

“I certainly did not imagine that a son of mine would get rich from being obnoxious!” Adam Yauch’s architect father Noel told Bradley. “What can I say? I could play the outraged parent, but I really find The Beastie Boys’ whole put-on terrifically amusing.

“At home he’s a generous, caring, polite person; I’d be devastated by now if he was really like that. Knowing him like I do, I know that his Jekyll and Hyde act is really very clever. I haven’t got a clue why it works, but then I’m not meant to understand it — it’s like when I wanted to be an abstract impressionist painter and my parents didn’t know what the hell that was all about either!”

Mike D’s mother was equally supportive of the trio, as Bradley noted.

“I can understand why it’s causing so much anxiety among parents,” she admitted, “but it’s really nothing to worry about. It’s just the same as when I was young and my parents would get mad at me for listening to Frank Sinatra. Twenty years ago it was The Beatles getting blamed for everything. If it wasn’t the Beastie Boys it would be someone else.”

Mike D himself detected that there was perhaps deeper underlying and unspoken reasons why the rappers were being targeted by moral crusaders and the media.

“In clubs in New York City there’s stuff that goes on that’s way more offensive than stuff we’ll ever do,” he pointed out, “stuff that would even offend us — people shooting up on stage, throwing up, setting themselves on fire… performance art. But they don’t go on stage and appear in front of twenty or thirty thousand people in Birmingham, Alabama.

“What really is the issue in cities like that,” he noted, “is that parents are letting their fourteen-year-old daughters go to shows where around forty per cent of the audience will be black. But not everyone wants to admit that, so when they find out we’re coming to town with a twenty foot penis and a girl in a cage they make that into the biggest issue to hit that town.”

“We didn’t set out to subvert, but it’s nice to shake people’s feathers once in a while,” added Adam Yauch. “Especially the way things are at the moment. America’s getting so uptight, so Right wing. The fact that us having a giant dick onstage makes so many people lose sleep, when it’s so ridiculous that no sane person could ever take it seriously, is a good indication of how neurotic America’s become.”

Sabaton to release World War I-themed movie on streaming services this spring

Sabaton will soon release The War To End All Wars – The Movie to streaming services.

Sweden’s power metal war dogs will make their animated, 67-minute motion picture available on Apple TV, Google Play, Youtube and Amazon Prime from March 11. It can now be pre-ordered via Apple TV ahead of release.

The band say The War To End All Wars – The Movie, which features songs from their namesake First World War-themed album, “takes viewers on a captivating journey through the harrowing and heroic stories of World War I”.

“It brings to life the remarkable and often untold experiences of those who lived through the Great War,” they continue. “Inspired by the narratives behind the songs of Sabaton’s 10th studio album The War To End All Wars, the film blends historical accuracy with creative artistry, all supported by a powerful musical score.

“These stories carry deep meaning and are presented in a unique and engaging format. The War To End All Wars – The Movie also features animated and live-action appearances by band members.”

Sabaton put out their War To End All Wars album in 2022, following the release of their similarly First World War-inspired effort The Great War in 2019.

The tie-in film was announced in late 2023 and premiered in numerous war museums that November. The events were part of the band’s History Rocks drive, designed to raise awareness of the historical events which inspire their music.

“The idea of this movie was initially to show journalists the stories behind the song of the latest album The War To End All Wars,” bassist Pär Sundström said at the time.

“Over the years we have met a lot of museums and talked to a lot of museums who have informed us about the difficulties of operating. They always have a constant struggle to find a new audience. A lot of them have asked us, ‘Is there anything Sabaton can do to help us, can we collaborate on something?’, and here we go.

“With the History Rocks project, we have come up with an idea where local museums can benefit from all our fans.”

Sabaton are expected to release a new album later this year. It will be their first since 2016’s The Last Stand to feature returning guitarist Thobbe Englund. Vocalist Joakim Brodén told Metal Hammer in 2023 that the project will not centre around the First World War.

“We could do 50 more albums and never run out of fantastic stories,” he said, “but we’ve done the ones we feel the most passionate about for now. We’re not going to go into the studio and look at more World War I stuff – I need a break! Ha ha ha!”

In November, Sabaton announced a 2025 European tour featuring some of their biggest shows to date, including one at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London. Support will come from ‘The Legendary Orchestra’, who’ll perform string rearrangements of several Sabaton songs. See dates below.

Ringo Starr has announced a pair of star-studded benefit concerts to help raise funds for Los Angeles wildfire relief.

The shows will take place at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium tonight and tomorrow. Starr — who recently released his T Bone Burnett-produced country album, Look Up — will be joined by artists from throughout the rock and country worlds. Among them, Jack White, Sheryl Crow, Billy Strings, Emmylou Harris, Mickey Guyton, Jamey Johnson, Brenda Lee and War and Treaty.

The performances will reportedly feature country renditions of such Beatles classics as “Boys,” “Act Naturally,” “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “Yellow Submarine” and “Don’t Pass Me By,” as well as Ringo’s beloved solo hit “It Don’t Come Easy.”

Officially dubbed Ringo & Friends At The Ryman, the gigs will be taped for a TV special airing later this spring on CBS and Paramount+.

“It is always a thrill to play the Ryman, and this time we are going country!” Starr said via statement. “T Bone has put together a great show. I’m excited to hear my songs done in a country vein and to play with this incredible group of musicians. It will be two nights of peace, love and country music.”

Ringo Starr’s Country History

Look Up marks Starr’s return to country, a genre he embraced in 1970 on his first solo album, Beaucoup of Blues. The drummer was also responsible for several of the Beatles’ more country-leaning tunes, including “Act Naturally,” “What Goes On” and “Don’t Pass Me By.”

Meanwhile, Starr is set to hit the road with his All Starr band beginning in June.
