Ride and former Oasis guitarist Andy Bell has collaborated with Neu! and Harmonia guitarist Michael Rother on his brand new single, i’m in love.
The new single, a cover of post-punk band The Passions 1981 hit I’m In Love With A German Film Star, also features vocals from Dot Allison and gives the song a dream-pop meets krautrock makeover.
The single is taken from Bell’s upcoming third solo album, pinball wanderer, which he will release through Sonic Cathedral on February 28.
“I went through a stage of playing the guitar part for that song at every Ride soundcheck,” says Bell of the new single. “Erol Alkan has always maintained it’s ‘proto shoegaze’ and I agree. Dot has been a friend of mine for a long time now. Like many people of a certain age, I loved One Dove, and when I booked her to DJ at a club night in Sweden in about 2004, she levelled the place by playing Ace Of Spades by Motörhead at 3am and we became mates. I played on some tracks on her last album Consciousology and this was her returning the favour.
“Then, incredibly, Michael Rother from Neu! also ended up on it. I met him at his show at the Barbican last February and asked him to remix the song, but instead he decided he wanted to play guitar, which took everything to a whole new level. I was leaving for a tour the next morning and I knew I had to mix the single before I left. Hearing Michael’s guitar parts in the mix was such an incredible feeling; it just fired me up to keep on recording and mixing into the night.”
Bell will be playing a series of acoustic solo shows for the first time, forming part of a tour of independent record shops in February and March. The shows are as kick off with an album launch at London’s Stranger Than Paradise. You can see the full list of dates below.
pinball wanderer will be available in a variety of formats including limited cyan, magenta and yellow vinyl variants.

Slayer’s Kerry King has revealed what his relationships with the members of Metallica look like, including original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine.
Talking on the Lipps Service With Scott Lipps podcast, the guitarist, who briefly played with Mustaine in Megadeth in 1985, says he has some time for the ex-Metallica man, but will always “bolt” before long.
“Mustaine’s cool, but Mustaine’s one of those guys that he can’t help but stick his foot in his mouth,” says King (via Blabbermouth). “So, I’ll take my 20 minutes and I’ll bolt just before anything gets uncomfortable.”
Turning to the current members of Metallica, the guitarist continues: “It’s funny, James [Hetfield, singer/guitarist] is one of those guys, even though we’ve got basically the same career, different circles, we did the Big Four [concerts featuring Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax in 2010 and 2011], he made a point to come say hey to us, but it’s funny that it hasn’t occurred in the 40 years we’ve both been doing this that I’ve rarely seen James.
“Kirk’s [Hammett, lead guitarist] cool, Rob’s [Trujillo, bassist] cool, Lars [Ulrich, drummer] is cool. We hang out when they feel like hanging out. Yeah, that’s all of ’em.”
Mustaine is one of metal’s most famously outspoken figureheads. For example, during a Megadeth concert in Northern Ireland in 1988, he dedicated a song to “the cause”, not knowing it was a sobriquet for the IRA. Megadeth had to be escorted across the Irish border in a bulletproof bus afterwards, and the incident partially inspired one of the band’s biggest songs, Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.

“I think if myself and Dave Mustaine could have coexisted for four years, it would have been a very different band,” he reflected. “I’m not saying I’d have made them better – I’d have made them different.”
During a Loudwire interview in 2015, King said that he joined Megadeth because it could be a “gigantic learning situation” that helped promote Slayer.
“I didn’t go and say, ‘Hey, I’m gonna be in Megadeth,’” he explained, before quipping: “I don’t know how anybody can be in Megadeth for more than a couple hours. That guy [Mustaine] is crazy.”
Mustaine was in Metallica from 1982 to 1983 and formed Megadeth shortly after his dismissal. King co-founded Slayer in 1981 and, though the band retired in 2019, they reactivated last year as a live-only force.
“I knew The Poison was going to be massive!” Metal Hammer releases exclusive Trivium x Bullet For My Valentine bundle – featuring a t-shirt you can’t get anywhere else!
Alongside the new issue of the magazine, which comes with a cover you can’t buy anywhere else, the package contains a t-shirt only available through us! Its striking design pays tribute to the bands’ 2005 classics Ascendancy and The Poison, both of which will be played in full when they hit the road in late January.
“For [Matt Tuck, BFMV singer/guitarist] and I, these records in 2005 changed our lives,” Trivium frontman Matt Heafy says in the new Hammer. “But we were only able to really see the impact 10, 15, 20 years after. A lot of the coolest metal bands that I love these days, I’ll talk to them and they’ll say, ‘Trivium was my first live band I ever saw.’ Or they’ll say Ascendancy or The Poison was their first record. That’s so cool!”
“This is going to sound cocky here, but I knew the album was going to be massive,” Tuck adds as he looks back on The Poison. “I knew it was going to fucking kick off. I believed what we were doing was better than anyone else and it was more unique than anyone else. I believed in it, in me and in the band. Belief made this happen.”
As well as the Trivium x BFMV interview, the new Hammer lists the 50 albums metalheads will need to hear in 2025, including releases from such titans as Sleep Token, Halestorm, Architects, Jinjer and Cradle Of Filth.
“[Our new album is] called The Screaming Of The Valkyries and it should be out at the beginning of April,” Cradle Of Filth lynchpin Dani Filth reveals in a Hammer exclusive. “It’s got elements of everything we’ve done, really. It has a few head nods to works like Midian and Dusk And Her Embrace, especially in the atmosphere and the subject matter.”

Louder’s resident Gojira obsessive was still at uni when he joined the team in 2017. Since then, Matt’s become a regular in Prog and Metal Hammer, at his happiest when interviewing the most forward-thinking artists heavy music can muster. He’s got bylines in The Guardian, The Telegraph, NME, Guitar and many others, too. When he’s not writing, you’ll probably find him skydiving, scuba diving or coasteering.
As part of their 30th-anniversary celebrations, Israeli prog metallers Orphaned Land have re-recorded the very first song they ever wrote to honour two friends who have been killed in the recent conflict in the Middle East.
The Beloved’s Cry was the title of the band’s very first demo, released in 1993 and also appeared on 1994’s debut album Sahara. The two new versions honour the band’s friends Yotam Haim and Eden Yerushalmi, and readers should be warned that both versions feature recordings from both just prior to their abductions in the conflict.
The band have long pushed for peace and a greater understanding between all faiths, something singer Khobi Farhi eloquently put across when he appeared at the 2018 Prog Awards.
In a lengthy statement, the band say: “As part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of Orphaned Land’s debut album Sahara, we decided to re-record the very first song the band ever wrote and recorded—an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind piece, and the only love song the band has ever created: The Beloved’s Cry.
In addition to celebrating the album’s milestone, two profound events inspired us to record two new and unique versions of this timeless song.
The Hanukkah show that followed October 7th was emotionally overwhelming for us. The band even posted on social media asking if it would be appropriate to perform at all. After receiving an outpouring of support, we went on to play two concerts filled with hope. During these shows, children in the audience lit candles on stage in an evening that brought everyone—both the audience and the band—to tears. Together, we lit and dedicated a Hanukkah candle for Yotam Haim, who at that moment was still alive but held captive in Gaza. The atmosphere was luminous, and the crowd was filled with hope and strength. Sadly, that hope lasted only for a night, as the very next morning, we learned that Yotam had been tragically killed while trying to escape captivity.
In August, I travelled to Berlin on behalf of the band to attend the Metal Hammer Awards, Europe’s largest metal magazine awards ceremony. To our joy and surprise, Orphaned Land won the prestigious “Attitude” award for our work in bridging divides and spreading unity over the years. When I accepted the award, I wore a ‘Bring Them Home’ shirt that I managed to arrange in Berlin. On stage, I called for an end to the war and the immediate return of all hostages. The night filled me with pride and happiness—feelings that were short-lived. The very next morning, we received the devastating news of the cold-blooded murder of six hostages, including Eden Yerushalmi, who had been abducted from the Nova music festival. After 11 months in captivity, she was found deceased, weighing only 36 kilograms, in conditions of unimaginable deprivation.

These days are a time of immense darkness. Our band, often seen by our audience as a beacon of light, felt reduced to nothing more than a flickering flame on a matchstick.
Still, despite it all, we have no choice but to continue walking this path—to shine with whatever light remains and ring every bell that can still chime.
We recorded two new versions of The Beloved’s Cry, now released in memory of our beloved Eden Yerushalmi and Yotam Haim.
Both versions include the voices of Eden and Yotam, recorded in moments before their abduction (alongside identical versions without their voices, which will also be released this Friday for those who find it too painful to bear). We hope these songs will help us remember and honour them and inspire us to someday be worthy of them—in a better world.
We will always remember you, Eden.
We will always remember you, Yotam.
Kobi Farhi, on behalf of Orphaned Land.”

Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse Of The Heart, one of the biggest power ballads of the 1980s, was originally intended for a Nosferatu musical.
Penned by legendary composer and record producer Jim Steinman, the track was revisited on a number of occasions across his career, but found its greatest success with the Welsh singer upon its 1983 release as the lead single from her fifth studio album, Faster Than the Speed of Night.
Impressed by his work on Meatloaf‘s balls-to-the-wall mega hit Bat Out Of Hell in 1977, Tyler reached out to the songwriter through her record company, CBS, with hopes of a collaboration.
“I’d seen Meat Loaf on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test doing Bat Out of Hell, so I told Muff Winwood at Sony that I wanted to work with Jim Steinman,” Tyler told The Guardian during a 40th anniversary reflection on the hit in 2023. “Muff looked at me like I was barmy and told me that Jim would never do it. ‘I just want you to ask him,’ I said.”
Though he initially declined Tyler’s offer, Steinman was eventually swayed after hearing demos from the powerhouse vocalist, later stating that she had the “perfect voice” for what he was trying to accomplish, adding: “her performance [on the track] was like an exorcism.”
In the 2023 interview, Tyler revealed: “Around the time we were recording, Meat Loaf had lost his voice, and after it was a hit he always used to say: “Dang. That song should have been mine!” I poured my heart out singing it.”
The earliest version of Total Eclipse Of The Heart took form in 1969 for a high school musical Steinman had written and starred in titled The Dream Engine, before returning to the song on a professional basis for a musical based on FW Murnau’s 1922 vampire film Nosferatu.

Composed during a lunar eclipse, the fang-toothed iteration was given the new name of Vampires In Love, though it was “never finished” and finally put aside along with the shelving of the musical. Fortunately, years after Tyler’s monumental triumph with the track, it would once again find its teeth for a different bloodsucking musical titled Dance Of The Vampires (Tanz der Vampire), Steinman’s stage adaptation of the 1967 Roman Polanski comedy horror film The Fearless Vampire Killers, which debuted in Vienna in 1997.
Dance Of The Vampires (Tanz der Vampire) was built from an entirely new songlist, aside from Total Eclipse Of The Heart, which was retitled Totale Finsternis for the show. Speaking of the reasoning behind the ballad’s inclusion during an interview with Playbill in 2002, the year the show came to Broadway, Steinman explained: “That was an accident almost. I’m surprised it stayed in. But, it was in [the] Vienna [production]. I had only a month and a half to write this whole show and we needed a big love duet.
“But with Total Eclipse of the Heart, I was trying to come up with a love song and I remembered I actually wrote that to be a vampire love song. Its original title was Vampires in Love because I was working on a musical of Nosferatu, the other great vampire story.”
He continued, “If anyone listens to the lyrics, they’re really like vampire lines. It’s all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love’s place in [the] dark. And so I figured ‘Who’s ever going to know; it’s Vienna!’ And then it was just hard to take it out.”
In 2022, Tyler would attend the show’s 25th anniversary at the Stage Palladium Theater in Stuttgart as their guest of honour.
Tyler’sTotal Eclipse Of The Heart would go on to become the fifth-best selling single of 1983 in the UK, also shooting to the top of the charts in the US and many other countries across the world. At its highest point it sold an astounding 60,000 copies a day. Thankfully, in the midsts of its globe-spanning mainstream success, the track still managed to retain its gothic roots, with Tyler telling the Guardian: “We shot the video in a frightening gothic former asylum in Surrey. The guard dogs wouldn’t set foot in the rooms downstairs where they used to give people electric shock treatment.”
Unfortunately, Total Eclipse Of The Heart didn’t quite make it onto the soundtrack of the newest Nosferatu interpretation by Robert Eggers, but we won’t hold this missed opportunity against him for too long.
Actor Steve Guttenberg, who rose to fame as Police Academy‘s Officer Mahoney, is among those currently trying to fight the Los Angeles wildfires.
Guttenberg, also known for his roles in hit films such as Three Men and a Baby, Short Circuit and Cocoon, was interviewed Tuesday during a live news broadcast. The reporter initially did not recognize the actor, who was trying to move cars that had been abandoned on the street so that firefighters could get through to battle the blaze in his Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
“What’s happening is people take their keys with them as if they’re in a parking lot. This is not a parking lot. We really need people to move their cars,” Guttenberg told KTLA in the video posted below. “If you leave your car behind, leave the key in there so a guy like me can move your car so that these fire trucks can get up there.”
In a July 2024 story promoting his appearance as the Grand Marshall of the town’s Fourth of July parade, Guttenberg was described as “one of the most beloved residents” of Pacific Palisades. “I’ve lived here for 37 years and every day in the Palisades is like a vacation,” he explained. “[I love] the enthusiasm of the people. There is an air of delight and town togetherness for the various events.”
As of Thursday morning, the New York Times reported that multiple Los Angeles-area wildfires, fueled by a recent lack of rain and the Santa Ana winds, has so far burned more than 27,000 acres of land and killed at least five people.
“This is the worst fire I’ve ever seen in my life, and it’s terrible. The sky at one in the afternoon is dark, it looks like evening,” Guttenberg told NBC News on Wednesday. “If you’re able-bodied, help people, help people in wheelchairs, small children, mothers that have anxiety and are in panic attacks. It’s really important to help people.”
While praising the efforts of his neighbors to help each other during this tragedy, Guttenberg expressed hope for the future. “When all this is over and we go back to normal life, let’s try to keep this empathy, let’s try to keep this kindness and this thoughtfulness. This is a time that we’ve got to band together. We’re not one street or one town or one city, we’re one community.”

Music’s Worst Concert Accidents and Tragedies
The possibility for danger always lurks whenever large groups of people get together, and that’s especially true at concerts and festivals.
Steely Dan came to a sudden stop. Joy Division did, too. Queen bid rock farewell. David Bowie left Berlin – and all of its cool weirdness – behind. Big changes were afoot for Journey.
There were also signs of what was to come, years before the advent of MTV. Hall and Oates returned to the top but with a whole new sound. Talking Heads moved far beyond their nervy roots. Blondie also stretched new creative muscles. Def Leppard arrived. Genesis hinted at their own sweeping commercial possibilities.
In a way, it’s hard to believe all of this happened in just one year. The following staff-voted list of Top 40 Rock Albums of 1980 puts it all in perspective.
Top 40 Rock Albums of 1980
The year was marked by new beginnings, abrupt endings, historic turns and subtle shifts.
Bruce Hall said he didn’t want to form his own version of REO Speedwagon after the band’s dissolution last month.
The bassist had been sidelined due to ill health, but was set to return to action in 2025. However, vocalist Kevin Cronin challenged the move, leading to a deadlock that resulted in the band name being retired after a final show on Dec. 21.
With Cronin’s plan outvoted by the other two owners of the REO Speewagon name – Hall and retired keyboardist Neil Doughty – he decided to continue touring under his own name, with the final lineup of the band following him.
In a recent social media post, Hall said that Cronin “did not found this band,” adding: “No one forced him to rebrand. He decided he wanted to tour with the sub bassist instead of me.
“The other two owners said ‘no’ and I was scheduled to return in 2025… so he quit. He and he alone did this. I wanted nothing more than to continue to tour after my scheduled, successful back surgery. I’ve been cleared to play since January.”
Hall was later asked by journalist Mitch Lafon if there was any prospect of forming a new REO Speedwagon with the support of Doughty.
“I don’t want to, honestly,” he replied. “REO is our band and Kevin should always be our lead singer. Fans deserve the real deal, not another tribute band.”
Even Irving Azoff Couldn’t Save REO Speedwagon
Last month Doughty revealed that industry heavyweight Irving Azoff had attempted to mediate in the dispute, feeling a connection with the first band he’d ever managed.
“He was totally sympathetic to what’s going on and why me and Bruce have to do what we’re doing,” Doughty said. “He had a talk with Kevin and called me back the next day. He said, ‘I tried. I have no stake in this. It’s just that you guys were my first band.’ It’s a shame, but he didn’t take sides. He just said, ‘I couldn’t do anything about it.'”
During the final show, Cronin told the crowd: “The REO Speedwagon name is being retired tonight, but the music, the spirit, the songs of REO Speedwagon will live on with this band and with me under the name Kevin Cronin. We hope you join us on that adventure.”

Rock Duck Radio producer Mark Christopher Garrett has shared a restored version Savatage’s classic Streets as a double album, as it was originally intended, via YouTube. Check it out below.
Garrett: “Savatage’s and Paul O’Neills’ Streets: A Rock Opera was released in 1991 by Atlantic Records. Originally intended as a double album, Atlantic Records decided to scratch the double album and released it as a solo album/cd/tape. All the recordings for the project were then stored at the Atlantic Records vault.
Years later, after the success of Paul O’Neills’ and Jon Oliva’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra, they wanted to release Srreets: A Rock Opera – The Story Of D.T. Jesus in its entirety, only to find out Atlantic Records misplaced the original recorded tracks in their vault and cannot find them. Oliva and O’Neill even offered a $1000.00 reward for anyone who could find them; none could.
Rock Duck Radio is now proud to present for the first time ever, the infamous Streets A Rock Opera Double Album restored in its entirety (almost). Some are the original recordings, just lower quality, others such as ‘Desiree’ are familiar to the Savatage fanbase with Zach Stevens singing, butt can now be heard in its proper context of the full D.T. Jesus storyline, kind of like the song ‘Stay’ as well. One song I was not able to get and that was ‘Sanctuary’, but it was substituted with the song ‘Target’, which is what it was originally based on anyway.
Songs like ‘Beyond Broadway’ and others are the original ‘lost tracks’. The worst track I found was ‘Island Of The Kings’. It was a very rough 4-track demo with a lot of tape hiss; fortunately, in the context of the D.T. Jesus storyline it really works. A lot of work went into the making and restoration of this rock masterpiece, I hope you enjoy!
Paul O’Neills vision can now be heard the way he intended it, may he Rock In Peace up in heaven with our brother Criss Oliva, this video is for you my friends, U.R.O.K!”
