CARLOS SANTANA Paid Original Artist Out Of His Own Pocket After He Found Out His Hit Was A Rip-Off; PROFESSOR OF ROCK Reports (Video)

Professor Of Rock has released the video below, along with this introduction…

“Coming up, an interview with Carlos Santana, a musical genius, a guru of the highest order, and a saint. You have to see this interview. So try to follow this if you can. Santana’s biggest song of the 70s, ‘Black Magic Woman’, was a rock classic that many people have no clue is a cover from a band that started as a blues band… but would end as one of the biggest rock bands ever when it became a completely different set of members but that’s not all. It was a cover, but the guy who wrote it basically admitted that he ripped off the music from a song from the 50s. So when the cover song became a huge hit for today’s guitarist, he decided to send royalties out of his pocket to the guy who got ripped off! Today’s legend got inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame after several decades of legendary songs and albums, and everybody thought his career was winding down, and then the year after his induction he had one of the biggest albums ever including a song that was the #1 song of the year in two different years falling at the end of a decade and beginning a new one. The stories are next on Professor of Rock.”

Slipknot in 2000, unmasked

Rare, newly unearthed, footage of an unmasked Slipknot soundchecking for a hometown show Des Moines on New Year’s Day 2000 has been posted on an fan account on Instagram.

Having played the Super Toad Entertainment Center with Coal Chamber, Dope and Powerman 5000 on October 17, 1999, their first major hometown show following the release of their self-titled Roadrunner records debut, The Nine returned to the venue for a special New Year’s Day celebration on January 1, 2000, as part of their World Domination Tour.

And now, thanks to the people behind the Slipknotvideos_ Instagram account, fans can watch footage both of the soundcheck – during which the band are unmasked, and wearing regular clothing – and a clip of the gig itself, when their trademark red boilersuits and masks disguise their true identities.

Speaking to Metal Hammer last year, producer Ross Robinson revealed that the very first time he saw the band play, on they were unmasked.

“We’d arranged to meet them at Sid’s parents’ house, and they were all waiting for me, unmasked, on the deck,” he recalled. “As we drove up, I saw them run off, like excited children, into the basement where they rehearsed. Then they put on their instruments, and, oh my God…”

“Without the masks, I could see their facial expressions,” he says. “All that insanity was fully visible. I was kind of bummed out knowing that they wore masks because they were so expressive without them.”

Carlos Santana Postpones Las Vegas Residency After Fall at Home

Santana has postponed its upcoming Las Vegas residency after leader Carlos Santana accidentally fell in his Hawaii home.

Shows were to start on Jan. 22 and run through Feb. 2 at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas as part of Santana’s residency there. Concerts announced for May at the venue are still scheduled.

“I am sorry to say that Carlos was out taking a walk at his vacation home in Kauai, [and] he took a hard fall, and he broke his little finger on his left hand,” Santana’s management said in a press statement. “He had to have pins inserted in the finger. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to play guitar for approximately six weeks. Doctors do say that he will recuperate fully.

“Carlos is doing well and is anxious to be back onstage soon. He just needs to heal. Santana profoundly regrets these postponements of his upcoming performances, but accidents happen, and his health is our number one concern. He is looking forward to seeing all of his fans very soon.”

Santana postponed tour dates in 2022 after the guitarist collapsed onstage during a performance in Michigan. “Heat exhaustion and dehydration” were to blame for that incident.

Neil Young to Release Unissued 1977 Album ‘Oceanside Countryside’

Neil Young to Release Unissued 1977 Album ‘Oceanside Countryside’

Neil Young has announced the release of the previously unissued album Oceanside Countryside, recorded between May and December 1977.

The album, scheduled for release on Feb. 14, is part of Young’s Analog Originals series. The 10 songs share themes with the record that replaced Oceanside Countryside in 1978, Comes a Time. Three songs – “Goin’ Back,” “Human Highway” and “Field of Opportunity” – appeared on Young’s ninth album when it was released in October of that year.

“This analog original album was recorded in 1977 and unreleased,” Young notes in a statement accompanying the announcement.

“These songs are the original mixes done at the time of the recordings in the order I planned for the album. I sang the vocals and played the instruments on Oceanside in Florida at Triad studios and Malibu at Indigo studio. I sang the vocals and recorded with my great band of friends, Ben Keith, Joe Osborn, Karl T. Himmel, and Rufus Thibodeaux at Crazy Mama’s in Nashville on Countryside.

“I hope you enjoy this treasure of an Analog Original recording, recorded by Tim Mulligan, as much as I do. Listening to it now, I think I should have put it out back then.”

The album’s first side features Young performing solo; Side Two includes assistance from steel guitarist Ben Keith, fiddle player Rufus Thibodeaux, drummers Karl T. Himmel and Levon Helm, and bassists Joe Osborne and Tim Drummond.

What’s on Neil Young’s ‘Oceanside Countryside’?

While these songs have appeared on other Young albums over the years, and Oceanside Countryside tracks were issued as part of 2024’s Archives Vol. III (1976-1987), the upcoming release marks the debut of several previously unreleased versions and the first time the track listing reflects the album’s original running order.

You can see the track listing for Young’s Oceanside Countryside below.

Original AC/DC Singer DAVE EVANS Reveals How The Band Got Its Name Prior To “The Best Gig In Australia”

Original AC/DC Singer DAVE EVANS Reveals How The Band Got Its Name Prior To

Vocalist Dave Evans, who sang for AC/DC from 1973 – 1974, recently appeared on Podpokas. During the inteview, which can be seen below, Evans shares the origins of the band’s name. An excerpt has been transcribed as follows:

“Well, we were happy rehearsing [in late 1973], and a guy that wanted to manage us called Alan Kissack, he said, ‘Hey, guys, I’ve got a show for you coming up in a few weeks. And he said it’s New Year’s Eve, 31st of December [of 1973], at the famous Chequers nightclub, the number one nightclub in Australia. New Year’s Eve at midnight, and it was the best gig in Australia. And we had to get a name because it was only in a few weeks. So we went, ‘Oh, okay.’ So we were a band, but we didn’t have a name. So we started tossing names around between us, but no one could agree. I had some really great names, but they didn’t like them. Anyway, so we didn’t know what to do. So, what we said is the next rehearsal, which was the next night, that we’d all come with three names each, and we were gonna put them in a hat and we’d pick one out. And whatever it is, that’s what we were gonna call ourselves. ‘Cause we needed a name quickly. So we said, ‘Okay, okay.'”

“So, the next rehearsal, I came with three names in my pocket… But anyway, it didn’t matter. Because what happened was when we all arrived together, [AC/DC’s founding rhythm guitarist] Malcolm Young said to us, ‘Look, my sister-in-law’ — [his] older brother George’s wife — ‘has suggested a name.’ And we said, ‘Okay, what is it?’ And Malcolm said, ‘AC/DC’. And I thought quickly, and I thought it’s an easy name to remember, AC/DC. And it was on the side of a lot of electrical appliances. AC/DC means alternate current and direct current. Alternate current means batteries. Direct current, plug it into the wall. And I had a portable record player, which had AC/DC on the side. So I could go to the park and just do it by batteries, then go back to the house and plug it in. AC/DC. Yeah, a lot of appliances were AC/DC.”

“And I thought, free advertising — free advertising everywhere. I thought, ‘Wow, free advertising on the side of all these appliances, and it’s easy to say, and it means power.’ And so it all went through my head very quickly. And I said yes. I said, ‘Great. I love it. I love it.’ And then [drummer] Colin Burgess, the famous Colin Burgess, he said, ‘Yeah, I like it too.’ And then [bassist] Larry [Van Kriedt] said, ‘Okay, I like it.’ And so Malcolm looked at us and said, ‘Well, shall we call ourselves AC/DC?’ And we all put our hands up, and it was unanimous. And so we said, ‘Okay, we are AC/DC.’ And we all shook hands. And we were AC/DC. And those three names [that I came up with], I went home and threw them away.”

Top 5 Concerts
OK, let’s be honest, any multi-date, all day event, with tons of bands, should be one of the best shows of any year. A single band/club gig can’t really compete, so this list is my favorite performances of the year, regardless of venue.

WYTCH HAZEL / EARLY MOODS – Hell’s Heroes: Houston, TX
HIRAX / WATCHTOWER – Legions Of Metal: Chicago, IL

Top 5 Brave Embarrassments
STRIKER – Ultrapower (Record Breaking Records)
More like ultra-flaccid, but I do agree about breaking records. Crack! What happened to this band? Is it Striker or Trixter? Saxophone, synthwave/electronic dance beats, neon colored street attire…long way from the band that toured with Bewitcher and Holy Grail, in ’19. Busy… with squelches, blips, effects and speed, but no coherent songs. They say, “Write what you know,” well there’s a tune called “Sucks To Suck.” Apparently another pandemic casualty. RIP

METALITE – Expedition One (AFM)
Well, at least the moniker is a warning. Watered down, video game, dance-metal that’s being foisted on unsuspecting listeners and helping kill off power metal. Predict this expedition will meet a similar fate to Shackelton’s Antarctic adventure.

COBRAKILL – Serpent’s Kiss (Frontiers)
At best, the missing link between Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil era Mötley Crüe, complete with whiny, nasal Vince Neil doppelganger. More likely, over-the-top German sleeze, with a visual nod to Manowar?

SKY WOLVES – Forgotten Tales (Golden Robot)
Don’t want to kill this Mexican quartet, as they attempt an ambitious combination of spirited orchestral power metal (think Italy, in the late 90s), and modern, fleet fingered, fretboard tapping.  Problem is, the damn thing sounds like it’s sung by the bubbly Gwen Stefani, and it’s a guy!

VISIONS OF ATLANTIS – Pirates II (Napalm)
Going down for the last time? After scoring some surprising success with the swashbuckling themed Part 1, the Austrians, with dual-sex vocalists, have gone to the well once too often. At best, old school Nightwish / (Anette Olzon era), symphonic power metal. At its worst, uninspired, pretentious material, and less than half of the tunes pertain to the ocean, let alone seafaring scoundrels.

Thoughts On 2024
Some years, there are 25 to 30 albums I have to pare down to make our annual this list. In 2024, struggled to find just 20. Plenty of good (often old) live recordings being unearthed though. Guess the post-pandemic flurry of activity has finally waned and this was just a gap year, as I already know of nearly a dozen early ’25 releases that have a good shot to make next year’s tally! Take a look below for albums of note.

Who/What Has To Stop In 2025
We know why they do it, but milking fans/collectors with endless reissues that lack valuable bonus material: remixes/remasters/re-recorded and sporadic alternative takes don’t count! Many have already purchased the album (maybe a couple of times, in various formats, Lp, cassette, CD, etc), so just updating the production ain’t enough (especially for a high priced color vinyl). Give us complete, unreleased live shows, previously unavailable (demo, if necessary) tracks, new/in-depth liner notes. Worse yet, every dollar/Euro/yen spent on rehashed material is a death knell in the career of fledgling acts, the next generation struggling to gain/maintain traction. Don’t forget about them!

Metal Predictions For 2025
Known impending releases to watch for:

CENTURY – Sign Of The Storm (Electric Assault Records) Hedging my bet a little, having already heard this gem, in its entirety. The traditional minded Swedes will be back in the States, come March. Yes!

SABER – Lost In Flames (ROAR) Long overdue (and delayed, thanks to signing with German label), the hot rising LA metallers will FINALLY have their sophomore effort heard. Hopefully plenty of live dates to follow!

DESTRUCTION – Birth Of Malice (Napalm) Always fun, when the Schmier has his say.

BRAINSTORM – Plague Of Rats (Reigning Phoenix Music) Long time coming, German power metal stalwarts.

ENFORCER (Napalm) Do the frenetic Swedes continue (return to form of) Nostalgia, or opt more for Zenith direction?

MEAN MISTREATER – Do Or Die (Dying Victims Productions) After strong debut and witnessing killer live show, eager to hear album #2

OWLBEAR – Feather & Claw (Alone Records) Speaking of album numero 2, once strictly a studio project, a pair of festival shows have increased their profile, and interest in them.

AMBUSH (Napalm) – Over the top traditional Swedish metal (plenty of bushy mustaches, too). Been 5 years since the last one!

IRON SPELL – From The Grave (self-issued) Gritty Chilean metal, of the traditional variety. Lots of singles, but only other full-length was back in ’16

Richie Sambora is living his best life since leaving Bon Jovi. A source told People in March 2024 that “personal issues” and stress within the band contributed to why the band’s longtime lead guitarist, 64, famously left Bon Jovi in the midst of their world tour in 2013 for personal reasons.

After his departure from Bon Jovi, his life was “unbelievable” as he was able to drive his daughter Ava to school and be there for her “full-time.”

Elsewhere in the article, the “insider” says Sambora has been working with musician/producer Bob Rock, who collaborated on Bon Jovi’s 1986 album, Slippery When Wet. “Nowadays, he’s a songwriter, so he’s constantly writing, playing,” they say. “It’s the life of a musician.”

ROBBIE WILLIAMS Confirms TONY IOMMI And GLENN HUGHES’ Participation On New Track “Rocket” – “Massive Guitars, As You Can Imagine… It’s Adrenaline-Filled And Balls-To-The-Wall”

ROBBIE WILLIAMS Confirms TONY IOMMI And GLENN HUGHES' Participation On New Track

Robbie Williams has confirmed the participation of Black Sabbath legend, Tony Iommi, on his new track, “Rocket”. And Glenn Hughes is along for the ride as well.

It was recently revealed that Robbie had recruited Iommi for the track by Williams’ drummer and musical director, Karl Brazil, making an appearance on the Percussion Discussion podcast (see below).

“He’s got an album to follow that we’ve been working on,” Brazil shared. “He’s working with various people, but I’ve been fortunate enough to do some songs with him. We’ve done a track called ‘Rocket’ with Tony [Iommi], which is very random.” He added that the track is “great” and “a rocker and really cool”. “Tony has done his thing on it,” he said of the guitarist.

Now, speaking with NME, Williams reveals that the comments were true and that the upcoming song will be shared as part of a new album. “Glenn Hughes [is on the track too]! I wanted to make the album that I’d make if I’d left Take That now, knowing what I know,” he said.

“This particular song [‘Rocket’] encapsulates that perfectly,” he added, going on to reveal what fans can expect from the album as a whole. “Unfortunately and fortunately for me, pop songs turned up along the way, too. I’m like: ‘Ah, fuck – a hit!’

“This [track] is massive guitars, as you can imagine. It’s adrenaline-filled and balls-to-the-wall,” he added. “That one in particular is my favourite song off my new album – that I’ve just announced is happening!” When asked about more details about the album, in particular the release date, Williams quipped: “I dunno – let’s see how well the film does…”

Happy New Year! Welcome to the first issue of 2025. (I can’t believe I’m typing that!) And to kick off what we’re hoping will be a very good year – and seriously, there’s a shedload of excellent stuff to look forward to, just check out our preview over the next few pages – we collared Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to look back over the last 50 years of their band, and find out just what they have planned to celebrate the occasion.

This issue we also revisit Metallica’s S&M as it celebrates its silver jubilee, take a deep dive into the post-Jim Morrison albums of The Doors, sit down with Sweet’s Andy Scott, hang out with Mark Tremonti, Andy Fairweather Low, Joe Satriani, DeWolff and so much more.

Until next month…

Features

Rush
Celebrating half a century since their debut, in a Classic Rock exclusive, we sat down with Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson at the end of 2024 to talk about their 50-year journey from there to here – and whether the Canadian prog rock legends will ever return to the studio or stage.

The Doors
The death of Jim Morrison in 1971 looked like it marked the end of the road for the band. But his bandmates had other ideas.

DeWolff
It was sweet home Alabama when the retro-rock flag bearers recorded their new album at two legendary studios there.

Sweet
Guitarist Andy Scott looks back at good times and bad, and hints that it’s not over for the Ballroom Blitzers yet.

Mark Tremonti
Take care of business. Quit your comfort zone. Don’t listen to rock journalists. Never forget you could still be washing cars. These are among the things that shape his world view.

Metallica
How did the world’s leading metal band come to team up with – shock, horror – an orchestra to make an album?

Classic Rock editor Siân has worked on the magazine for longer than she cares to discuss, and prior to that was deputy editor of Total Guitar. During that time, she’s had the chance to interview artists such as Brian May, Slash, Jeff Beck, James Hetfield, Sammy Hagar, Alice Cooper, Manic Street Preachers and countless more. She has hosted The Classic Rock Magazine Show on both TotalRock and TeamRock radio, contributed to CR’s The 20 Million Club podcast and has also had bylines in Metal Hammer, Guitarist, Total Film, Cult TV and more. When not listening to, playing, thinking or writing about music, she can be found getting increasingly more depressed about the state of the Welsh national rugby team and her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
