MR. BIG Drummer NICK D’VIRGILIO Shares New “So…You Want To Be A Musician?” Podcast Episode Featuring BIG BIG TRAIN’s CLARE LINDLEY (Video)

MR. BIG Drummer NICK D'VIRGILIO Shares New

Drummer Nick D’Virgilio (Mr. Big, Spock’s Beard) has shared a new episode of his “So…You Want To Be A Musician?” podcast. Check it out below.

“Welcome to Episode 11 of the podcast, where I’m joined by my bandmate in Big Big Train, Clare Lindley. Clare is not only my first female guest, but also an incredibly talented musician with a wealth of experience. It’s truly inspiring to hear her perspective on what it takes to make music your life. Her dedication, hard work, and passion are undeniable, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing her professionalism and skill on stage time and time again.

In this episode, we dive into Clare’s journey — starting in Scotland, where she grew up and made a name for herself, before moving to London to take on the city’s music scene head-on. Clare is also an educator, sharing her love of music with students of all ages, and—on top of that—she’s a professional rock climber! Her passion and drive are contagious, and I’m lucky to be in a band with someone so talented.

I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Cheers!”

Big Big Train will reissue their third studio album, Bard, on March 21, 2025. Originally released in 2002 and after many years of being unavailable as a physical CD, the album has been completely remixed by their longstanding engineer Rob Aubrey.

Additionally, the reissue features a live version of the album’s opening track, “The Last English King”, recorded during the band’s tour in fall 2024, as well “Headlands”, a song recorded during the original sessions but unavailable until now.

“I’m pleased to see Bard being reissued at last,” comments Andy Poole, the band’s former bassist and this album’s producer. “On its original release we expected Bard to be Big Big Train’s farewell. The album has a number of songs that I think stand up pretty well and which in retrospect laid some of the foundations for the upwards curve that the band subsequently embarked on. Rob Aubrey has worked wonders with the re-mix and enhanced the album considerably.”

“I’m never going to pretend that Bard is our best work,” Gregory Spawton adds. “But there’s been increasing demand from fans for a reissue and over the last few years, I’ve warmed towards the album, especially with the benefit of Rob Aubrey’s remix. I had never expected us to play anything from Bard live, but I’ve always been proud of ‘The Last English King’ and was particularly pleased with how we breathed new life into it on tour this year. It proved one of the highlights of the set, both for the band and apparently for fans too.”

“Since I joined the band in 2022, in parallel with creating new music I have been keen to embrace the entire back catalogue of Big Big Train,” says lead vocalist Alberto Bravin. “Of course, over 20 years ago, this was a very different Big Big Train and with the vocals being shared between a number of singers, Bard precedes David Longdon’s arrival as well. Bard certainly has its moments and I loved playing ‘The Last English King’ on tour this year.”

Bard will be released via the band’s own label English Electric Recordings on CD and 2LP and via Bandcamp high resolution download.

The CD and vinyl versions will be strictly limited editions and Bard will not be made available on streaming or other download platforms. The 2LP version of the album will be available as 180 gram “shark” blue vinyl (exclusive to Burning Shed and The Bandwagon USA) and 180 gram black vinyl.

The CD/2LP versions of the album will include extensive 4,000 word liner notes by Andy Stuart (author of the book A View From The Embankment, A View From The Line, which documented the band’s 2023 tour) using material from a new interview with Gregory Spawton.

On December 3rd, Arch Enemy played at El Foro Jai Alai in Tijuana, Mexico without vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, who was “very sick” and unable to perform. Fan-filmed video from the fully instrumental show can be viewed below.

Arch Enemy recently unleashed the title track from their forthcoming twelfth studio album, Blood Dynasty. The full album is slated for release on March 28 via Century Media Records.

Following the surprise drop of their single “Dream Stealer” in July and the subsequent release of “Liars & Thieves” in October, “Blood Dynasty” marks the third single offering from the highly anticipated album. The track promises to deliver Arch Enemy’s signature blend of powerful guitar riffs and dynamic vocals, showcasing the band’s evolution while staying true to their roots.

Founder and guitarist Michael Amott shares, “The third single from our upcoming album has arrived, and it’s the title track: ‘Blood Dynasty!’ This one shifts gears from the fast and furious energy of our two recent singles, diving deeper into melody and atmosphere. Immerse yourself in this dystopian soundscape!”

“Blood Dynasty” was mixed by Jens Bogren and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. The video was directed and produced by Mirko Witzki at Witzki Visions.

Unitopia announce new live release Alive And Kicking to be released in March

Prog collective Unitopia have announced they will release a new live Blue-ray/CD and USB, Alive And Kicking, through progrock.com’s Essentials label on March 7.

The new release was recorded on the band’s tour in support of 2023’s Seven Chambers album at a gig at Zoetermeer’s famous Boerderij venue in the Netherlands on September 14, 2023.

“We threaded the needle to make this tour happen,” explains label boss Mark Monforti. “Alphonso Johnson was unavailable and Don Schiff had to learn the show in four weeks. Chester Thompson had a bad case of tendinosis and asked to be replaced but came anyway, Mark Trueack was unable to stand for long periods, the band came from six different timezones and hadn’t met until three days before their show.

“John Greenwood and I had to donate money to get the production values to where they needed to be for the seven-show tour. It was only appropriate that they were touring an album about the frailty of the human condition.”

Formed in Australia in 1996 by singer Mark Truack and keyboardist Sean Timms, the band released four respected albums before splitting in 2012, with Timms forming Southern Empire and Truack United Progressive Fraternity. The band reformed in 2020 with an all-new line-up including Chester Thompson and fusion legend Alphonso Johnson.

A 15th-anniversary edition of Unitopia’s 2010 album Artificial is also to be released in 2025 along with Truack’s own Save US EP.

The USB version of Alive And Kicking includes a high-quality mp4 of the concert video, 48kHz 24-bit stereo audio tracks, and lyric videos. The Blu-ray, in addition to the stereo mix, includes a selectable DTS surround mix by band violinist Steve Unruh.

The 10 best metalcore albums of 2024

This year's best metalcore albums

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re taking a look back at what has been a blinding year for heavy music – and few scenes have been as prolific and stacked with great releases across the last twelve months as metalcore. It’s safe to say the genre is in the midst of another major resurgence right now, with British mainstays like Bring Me The Horizon and While She Sleeps continuing to evolve and put out top-tier material and young bands across Europe, the US and beyond shaping the sound of metalcore to come. Hell, even Poppy decided to make a full-on metalcore record this year and absolutely smashed it. With all that in mind, here are the ten best metalcore albums of the year, in reverse order of greatness.

BONUS ENTRY: Kaonashi – The Three Faces Of Beauty…

Not a full album but we had to shout this one out: the first of a three-part conceptual EP series dealing with themes of racism, homophobia and family dynamics, The Three Faces Of Beauty: A Violent Misinterpretation Of Morgan Montgomery is a startlingly emotional and visceral mini-journey with one of modern metalcore’s most insightful and creative bands. Frenetic, scything mathcore riffs, some dazzling drumwork and those trademark, wretched shrieks of Peter Rono make for a listening experience that is equal parts compelling and deeply uncomfortable.

10. Make Them Suffer – Make Them Suffer

The Aussie ragers reached peaked performance with their fifth, self-titled studio album, honing their increasingly polished sound while still layering in bowel-churningly heavy breakdowns, bursts of scatty tech metal riffage and some gorgeous melodies. New member Alex Reade fits the band like a glove, her clean vocals swirling around Sean Harmanis’ guttural roars with ease as Perth’s finest bash out some of the biggest hooks of their career.

9. Bring Me The Horizon – Post Human: Nex Gen

The much anticipated sequel to 2020’s Post Human: Survival Horror project, Bring Me The Horizon‘s latest offering is a sprawling, chaotic mish-mash of an album, taking just about everything that has defined the Sheffield trailblazers’ career so far – crushing modern metal, glitchy edm-core, anthemic radio rock, hooky alt-pop – and throwing it at the wall. Most incredibly of all, it absolutely works, nodding towards almost every era of the band while still pushing forwards with the giddy abandon of a toddler who’s chugged a pint of sugar syrup. If the toddler made a banging metalcore album. Which is what this is, to be clear.

8. While She Sleeps – Self Hell

The moment that the South Yorkshire five-piece finally collated the myriad influences they have been dabbling with over the last decade, stuck them all in a blender and poured the results into their boldest, most expansive work yet, Self Hell feels like the endgame of everything While She Sleeps have been building towards since they first blew up the British metalcore scene in the early 2010s. Packing elements of heavy metal, punk, alt rock, EDM, hip hop, pop and stadium rock into 45 breathless minutes, Sleeps’ sixth album emphatically outlines why they remain one of the most ambitious metalcore bands of their generation.

7. Alpha Wolf – Half Living Things

Merging snotty, antagonistic hardcore with the grubbier end of nu metal, Alpha Wolf’s third album is a relentless barrage of big riffs, even bigger breakdowns and braggadocios mosh calls. A couple of strays into more anthemic territory with Whenever You’re Ready and Ambivalence point towards the Aussies’ grand ambitions, but for the most part, Half Living Things is pure, thuggish rage and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Plus, Ice-T’s ‘This is Alpha Wolf, motherfucker! You wanna die?!’ on Sucks 2 Suck is one of the metal mic drops of 2024.

6. Imminence – The Black

Showing immense promise across their previous four albums but perhaps guilty of leaning just a little too vigorously into their more obvious influences, Swedish quintet Imminence struck gold with this year’s The Black. Flexing their now well-honed songwriting chops while broadening their sound to make the most of those signature orchestral elements, tracks like the pummelling Desolation, visceral Death By A Thousand Cuts and the emotionally devastating title track are proof that this is a band that reaching for greatness. A particular shout out to frontman/violinist Eddie Berg, too – surely in the running for the title of best vocalist in metalcore right now.

5. Scene Queen – Hot Singles In Your Area

Scene Queen’s debut album is about as subtle as a sparkly pink stiletto to the nuts, merging sugary-sweet pop hooks with big-ass metalcore riffs and twerkle-pit-ready breakdowns. Cynics would love to write off ‘Bimbocore’ as a cheap gimmick, but make no mistake about it: Hot Singles In Your Area is one of the most righteously furious albums of 2024, a knife held to the throat of music industry misogynists as its owner dishes out some of the most effortlessly catchy metal bangers you’ve ever heard.

4. Poppy – Negative Spaces

Anyone who’s followed Poppy’s career to date will be well aware that she knows her way around a killer metal riff, but teaming up with former Bring Me The Horizon man Jordan Fish for her latest album was a stroke of genius. Negative Spaces harnesses a dizzying array of influences from Bring Me themselves to Architects, Slipknot, Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Hole, Disturbed and Deftones, all sprinkled with Poppy’s own unmistakable touch of eccentric excellence. The result? An outstanding modern metalcore record that more than lives up to the sum of its inspirations.

3. SeeYouSpaceCowboy – Coup De Grâce

Guest spots by Spiritbox’s Courney LaPlante and nu gen star Kim Dracula may have grabbed a few headlines, but Coup De Grâce‘s brilliance is all SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s, a fearless, sprawling blend of post-hardcore emotion, metal rage, indie rock exuberance and the kind of pop savviness that will surely carry the San Diego natives to bigger stages than ever. Throw in a newfound sense of life-affirming lyrical urgency from frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa and you have all the trappings of an album of the year contender.

2. Heriot – Devoured By The Mouth Of Hell

‘Metalcore’ was never going to be able to contain a band like Heriot for long, and on their first studio album they’ve taken their already devastating and expansive sound into fascinating new reaches. Death metal, sludge, shoegaze, industrial and electronica combine to mould one of the best debuts from any British band in recent memory – metal or otherwise. From the pitch-black, tar-thick darkness of Foul Void to the guttural, grinding dirge of Mourn, there isn’t a second wasted on this absolute beauty.

1. Knocked Loose – You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To

There comes a time in most rising metal bands’ careers when they have a choice to make: do you reel back the heaviness and start polishing up your sound to appeal to as large an audience as possible, or put your foot to the fucking floor? Like Pantera on The Great Southern Trendkill and Slipknot on Iowa, Knocked Loose took the latter road and refused to compromise. Where many bands would introduce cleaner vocals and bigger melodies, the Kentucky crushers went harder, gnarlier, uglier than ever, producing both their heaviest album yet and one of the most devastatingly on-point albums of 2024. The results speak from themselves: months after the album’s release, Bryan Garris was dropping pig squeals on Jimmy Kimmel Live. You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is proof that you can resonate with people on a wider level without sacrificing an inch of your vitality or urgency. An instant classic.

Snoop Dogg has issued a ‘come and get me’ offer to the producers of popular British TV series MasterChef, stating his credentials to take over from presenter/judge Gregg Wallace , who has “stepped down” from the show amid multiple accusations about his inappropriate behaviour.

Wallace is currently the subject of a investigation by the BBC after 13 women, among them fellow TV host Kirsty Wark, came forward with allegations concerning his behaviour. In an ill-advised social media post, the presenter, 60, initially dismissed the accusations against him as coming from “middle-class women of a certain age”, but later apologised after a media storm.

With the investigation on-going, there has been no suggestion that the BBC will seek to replace Wallace, but Snoop Dogg, a man who has shown himself more than capable of carrying off any role with swagger and humour, is sniffing out an opportunity.

“You better believe Snoop could be the new MasterChef judge,” the hip-hop superstar tells The Mirror, suggesting that his “boy” Gordon Ramsay, who judges on the US version of the cooking show, would “back” him in his application for the UK version.

“He knows I am not playing when it comes to food,” Snoop says. “He knows I can cook – I have even given him some tips. I hosted a cooking show over here (Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party) and I have always been vocal about wanting to work on a UK show. I love the place – and for real, this could be the perfect opportunity.”

Earlier this year, in a Capital FM radio interview, Snoop revealed that he has a huge affection for Britain, and specifically for the royal family.

When, during an interview conducted over high tea, DJ Jordan North relayed a rumour that Prince William, is “a huge Snoop fan”, the Californian entertainer took the news in his stride, and added, “Well, the Queen was a fan too. Rest in peace to the Queen, that was my girl. You know what I’m saying?”

We do Snoop, we do.

Judas Priest announce mega London show with support from Alice Cooper

Judas Priest have added a London date to their summer 2025 European tour.

The Metal Gods will play their biggest-ever show in the UK capital on July 25 at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena. As if that weren’t massive enough, support will come from shock rock pioneer Alice Cooper.

Presale tickets will be available from December 12 at 10am local time via Live Nation, with general sale starting the day after at 10am.

The Birmingham metal legends have also announced a date at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre for July 23, where support will come from Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons. Tickets for that show will also go on Live Nation presale on December 12 at 10am, then onto general sale on December 13 at 10am.

The two UK shows have been added to the end of Judas Priest’s previously announced mainland European tour. See dates below.

The band announced the run of continental shows last month, and revealed they’ll not only honour material from their new album Invincible Shield, but also celebrate the 35th anniversary of classic record Painkiller. On social media, they promised a “rare” and “unique” set featuring “beloved classics” from their 1990 album.

Judas Priest released Invincible Shield back in the spring and it received rave reviews. Metal Hammer’s Rich Hobson said it “may well be the most defiantly, unrelentingly triumphant record of their career” and awarded it a near-perfect 4.5 stars. It was also the highest-charting album of their career in the UK, reaching number two.

In September, singer Rob Halford said that Invincible Shield will not be Judas Priest’s final album. “I think that it’s inevitable there will be something else. When it will happen, I have no idea,” he told Audio Ink Radio.

The vocalist added: “This band thrives on the metal that we make, the time that we spend with each other, ’cause there’s a lot of love in this band for each other.”

Metallica and former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Robert Trujillo has explained how he met the Prince Of Darkness.

During an appearance on the Toby Morse One Life One Chance podcast, the 60-year-old says that he met the Black Sabbath singer in 1991 while recording his then-band Infectious Grooves’ debut album The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move….

Osbourne was in the same studio, Devonshire in North Hollywood, at the same time, recording his 1991 opus No More Tears. And, as Trujillo explains, the Godfather Of Heavy Metal had a nasty habit of wandering off to hang out with other artists in the studio.

“He was wild back then,” Trujillo says of Osbourne (via Ultimate Guitar). “So, that’s how I got to know him because he kept sneaking into our studio and hanging out with us.”

The bassist adds that the singer seemingly made such a habit of running away that minders would come through asking after him. “And then, the minder would come in, like, ‘Have you seen Ozzy?’ And we’d be like, ‘No, man…’ ‘Oh, we can’t find him again.’”

Trujillo continues: “All of a sudden, [Ozzy] creeps in, ‘Don’t tell him I’m here!’ Those were good times. He ended up singing on a song called Therapy, which was fun, and that’s how I got the call to audition a few years later when they were looking for a bass player. So everything finds its place.”

Trujillo played bass for Osbourne from 1996 to 2003, when he left to join Metallica. However, he was recently part of an all-star band who paid tribute to the vocalist at his Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. Joining Trujillo onstage that night were Billy Idol, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, Wolfgang Van Halen, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, longtime Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde and more.

Louder’s resident Gojira obsessive was still at uni when he joined the team in 2017. Since then, Matt’s become a regular in Prog and Metal Hammer, at his happiest when interviewing the most forward-thinking artists heavy music can muster. He’s got bylines in The Guardian, The Telegraph, NME, Guitar and many others, too. When he’s not writing, you’ll probably find him skydiving, scuba diving or coasteering.

Guns N’ Roses Announce 2025 Tour Dates

Guns N’ Roses will embarked on a sprawling worldwide tour in 2025.

The newly announced trek — given the title Because What You Want and What You Get Are Two Completely Different Things — kicks off on May 23 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking the band’s first performance in that country. From there, GNR will wind their way through such major cities as Istanbul, Barcelona and London.

The tour, which will find the band headlining stadiums and festivals, is currently scheduled to wrap on July 31 with a performance at in Wacken, Germany. The full list of dates can be found below.

Public Enemy, Rival Sons and Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter will trade opening duties  on select dates. Tickets for all non-festival shows go on sale through Guns N’ Roses Nighttrain fan club Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 9AM local time.

When Was Guns N’ Roses’ Last Tour?

After touring extensively from 2021 to 2023, Guns N’ Roses took a break from the road in 2024.

“I think for me, I know I had to rest — I had to rest my body,” bassist Duff McKagan explained in a recent interview with Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk. “A lot of hours on stage. A lot of traveling. And I’ve gotta listen to my body these days. I’ve gotta listen. So I had to rest. I think we all need to rest. Slash, he’ll go out and tour, like, four weeks later [with one of his projects] and do it all over again. I’m, like, ‘Okay, dude. More power to you. I’m gonna go to Hawaii. I’m going to Hawaii, man.’”

GNR’s members still found plenty of ways to stay active during their break. McKagan toured behind his Lighthouse solo LP and released a new live album, while Slash released and toured behind his second solo effort, Orgy of the Damned. Meanwhile, Axl Rose collaborated with other artists, covering UFO‘s “Love to Love” with Michael Schenker and making a surprise appearance alongside Billy Joel at the Piano Man’s final Madison Square Garden residency show.
