Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band Announces Fall 2023 Tour

Ringo Starr‘s All Starr Band will hit the road this fall for a U.S. tour throughout September and October.

The monthlong trek will begin on Sept. 17 in Ontario, California, and run through Oct. 13 in Thackerville, Oklahoma. You can see the full list of dates below.

The current All Starr Band lineup features Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Edgar Winter, Warren Ham, Hamish Stuart and Gregg Bissonette. The band had to postpone and cancel several 2022 dates due to various COVID infections — including two for Starr — but the drummer is adamant about keeping the show on the road whenever possible.

“I was in Atlanta in bed with the flu once and had to cancel two gigs, that’s the only time,” the former Beatle told Pollstar. “I love to play. I love an audience. This is a known fact. I keep telling the band, If only three people turn up, we’re playing.”

Before the fall trek, Starr will kick off his spring tour on May 19 in Temecula, California.

Tenacious D defend “the honour and integrity” of video games in banjo-driven one-minute single

Tenacious D, guest editors of the current issue of Metal Hammer, have released their first original song since 2018’s Post-Apocalypto album. One-minute single Video Games is a banjo-driven celebration of the importance of video gaming, with frontman Jack Black revealing that he doesn’t actually play video games at all. Well, apart from God Of War. And Fallout 4.

The lyrics go on to reveal that Black also plays Red Dead Redemption 2, but not because it’s a video game. A bit like reading Playboy for the articles.

But Red Dead Redemption 2, that is not a game
It’s an incredible journey through old American history
Fighting for your life and fighting for your family
Try to live your days with honour and integrity
That’s not a game, that’s an adult thing
That’s not a game at all, that’s like fuckin’ Shakespeare

Speaking about the song, Jack Black and Kyle Gass say, “It’s about growing up and leaving childish things behind, but then realising that video games are more than just mindless toys. In fact, they can be a true expression of huge ideas that belong in the pantheon of great works of art!

“It’s about time someone defended the honour and integrity of this bold new horizon. Leave it to the greatest band in the world… Tenacious D!”

The animated video for Video Games, which was directed by Adam Paloian (SpongeBob SquarePants) and YouTuber Chris “Oney” O’Neill, finds Black and Gass depicted as familiar video-game characters, with Gass meeting a bloody end several times over the course of the 90-second clip.

“I have only been to two concerts in my life, and they were both Tenacious D shows,” says O’Neill. “It’s a real honour to work with Jack and Kyle, although I do feel bad about shooting Kyle’s penis off via animation.”

Tenacious D have a run of European dates scheduled for next month, a mix of festival appearances and arena dates, including a show at London’s O2 Arena on June 16. Full dates below.

In the current issue of Metal Hammer, Black and Gass picked the artists featured in the magazine, and conducted an interview with Ozzy Osbourne

“Everything you see in these pages reflects the contents of our deepest, darkest soul nuggets,” say the D themselves. “We have the power. We have the Metal. We have the Hammer. We are the D!”

How Peter Frampton ‘Lowballed’ His Way Onto Dolly Parton’s Album

Peter Frampton raised his hand to be on Dolly Parton‘s upcoming Rockstar album and wound up doing double duty on the upcoming set, which comes out Nov. 17.

Frampton will be the only artist of the myriad guests to be featured on two of the album’s 30 tracks, performing a duet with Parton on his 1975 single “Baby, I Love Your Way” (which became a hit from Frampton Comes Alive! the following year) and playing the guitar solo on her version of the Beatles‘ “Let It Be,” which also features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Mick Fleetwood.

“I’m very honored and pleased to be on her album,” Frampton tells UCR shortly after Rockstar‘s track listing was announced. And he can credit his impetus for his inclusion in the project.

“I was with a friend who had finished doing some backgrounds for the vocal on the Steven Tyler duet [‘I Want You Back’] and I said, ‘That’s right, she’s doing that rock album,'” Frampton recalls. “So I came home, I called my manager, I said, ‘I heard that Dolly’s doing this album right now. I’d love to do a guitar solo.’ He said, ‘Oh, I know Dolly.’ The next thing I know I’m on the telephone with Dolly’s producer, Kent Wells. He said, ‘I hear you want to do a guitar solo.’ I said, ‘Yes, I would love to do it.’ He said, ‘Is that all you want to do, a guitar solo?’ I said, ‘Well, I lowballed you with the guitar solo. I figured you had all your duets done.’ He said, ‘Well, would you ever think about doing one of your songs with Dolly?’ I said, ‘Let me think about … yes!’ (Laughs)

“So he said, ‘Let me call you back.’ He calls me back in, like, 10 minutes. He said, ‘Dolly would love to do ‘Baby, I Love Your Way’ with you.’ So we did, and it’s pretty phenomenal. She takes it to a whole other level. It’s such an honor she wanted to do that.”

That done, Frampton was happy to push his luck a little, too. “I said, ‘Kent, this is great, thank you. That was wonderful. But remember I lowballed you with the guitar solo? I still want to do an electric guitar solo,'” he says. “He goes, ‘OK … Would you like to do the solo on ‘Let It Be?’ So I said, ‘Don’t tell me.’ He says, ‘Uh-hum. Paul’s singing, Ringo’s playing drums, Mick Fleetwood’s on tambourine.’ “Oh. My. God!’ He said, ‘You want to do the solo?’ I said, ‘Uh-huh.’ So I did the solo, and I’m over the moon about that.”

Frampton didn’t try to simply copy the familiar solo from the Beatles’ version, however: “I told Kent, ‘I’m not gonna do the George Harrison solo, or even the Paul McCartney one on the [alternate] take of it. I can’t do that. I’m gonna play Frampton.’ But I did play through a Leslie [organ cabinet], but I had it on slow, not fast like on the record. It’s an interesting sound, and everyone seems to like it so far — even though I’ve transgressed the unwritten law and changed a Beatle thing. But I’m pretty proud of it.”

The guitarist notes that Parton was not present for any of his sessions, though the two met years ago at the office of a shared Nashville dentist, who happens to be producer Wells’ brother. “She’s a pistol, man,” Frampton says of Parton. “She runs the show, that’s for sure. It’s wonderful.”

The Rockstar appearances are a new part of an already busy year for Frampton, who’s battling Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), a slow-moving degenerative condition that’s atrophying his muscles. On June 21 he kicks off his Never Say Never U.S. summer tour, for which he’ll be seated but still ready to play favorites from throughout his career. “Yes, it’s progressed, yes it’s affected my hands, but I still enjoy playing for people, so why am I going to sit home when I can still go out and do it,” Frampton says. “The band can’t tell the difference [in my playing], and I’m worried about that,” he adds with a laugh.

In addition to the tour, he’s releasing a Frampton@50 vinyl box set featuring remastered editions of three of his early solo albums: Winds of Change, Frampton’s Camel (which turns 50 this year) and Frampton. Meanwhile, he has another blues album in the can, following 2020’s All Blues, and he’s also working on a new set of all-original material that’s still in progress.

“After we did the two blues albums and [2021 instrumental LP] Frampton Forgets the Words, I started getting inspired and started writing, and that’s when we did five or six tracks for what is going to be the next new material album,” he says. “Now I’m just basically, every day, working on getting those gems. It’s great to be able to create stuff that I haven’t felt this good about in a long time.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE Drummer TOMMY LEE Takes $2.2 Million Loss On Calabasas Compound; Photos

MÖTLEY CRÜE Drummer TOMMY LEE Takes $2.2 Million Loss On Calabasas Compound; Photos

After seven years of it bouncing on and off the market, Tommy Lee has finally offloaded his Calabasas compound for about $3.7 million, repots Dirt.com. While still a large sum of money by any measure, that amount is a whopping $2.2 million less than what the Mötley Crüe co-founder and drummer originally paid for the place 16 years ago, back in summer 2007.

Records indicate the discount-minded buyer is Max Nobel of Nobel LA, a high-end design firm specializing in custom real estate development. Both sides of the deal were repped by Emil Hartoonian of The Agency, who says “the new owner intends to bring the full potential of this property to modern-day highlights with unparalleled bespoke mastery.”

Tucked away on a hillside parcel spanning just over a quarter-acre of land offering sweeping city lights views, within a gated enclave above the Calabasas Country Club, the beige-hued stucco and terracotta-roof structure was built in the late 1980s. Inside, six bedrooms and eight baths are sprawled across nearly 10,000 square feet of three-level living space boasting polished chevron-patterned wood floors and rustic log-beamed ceilings throughout.

PETE TOWNSHEND Announces The First In A Series Of New Limited Edition Half-Speed Mastered Albums, Rough Mix & Empty Glass, Available In June

PETE TOWNSHEND Announces The First In A Series Of New Limited Edition Half-Speed Mastered Albums, Rough Mix & Empty Glass, Available In June

June 23 will see the release of the first in a series of half-speed mastered studio albums from Pete Townshend, Rough Mix and Empty Glass.

These limited-edition black vinyl versions have been mastered by long-time Who engineer Jon Astley and cut for vinyl by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios with a half-speed mastering technique which produces a superior vinyl cut and are packaged in original sleeves with obi strips and certificates of authenticity. Rough Mix is presented in a gatefold sleeve, and Empty Glass features a full-color inner bag with full lyrics and a 12” x 24” poster.

Rough Mix was initially released in September 1977 while The Who were on hiatus and was a collaboration with Small Faces bassist the late Ronnie Lane and features contributions from Who bassist John Entwistle, Eric Clapton, and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts among others.

The orchestral arrangements for the track “Street In The City” were provided by Townshend’s then father-in-law, noted British film and television theme composer Edwin Astley. Edwin’s son, Jon Astley has overseen this new remaster.

Produced by Chris Thomas (Roxy Music, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, Wings), Empty Glass was Townshend’s next solo release appearing in April 1980. The songs predominantly deal with issues Townshend was struggling with at the time, including alcohol, drugs, and the death of Keith Moon, The Who’s former drummer.

The second single from the album, “Let My Love Open the Door”, was a US Top 10 hit, propelling the album to #5 on the US Billboard chart, and the first single “Rough Boys,” which was dedicated to Pete’s children and The Sex Pistols, was a UK top 40 hit. The album was well received at the time, with some critics even referring to it as a Who album that never was.

Rough Mix tracklisting:

Side 1:

“My Baby Gives It Away”
“Nowhere To Run”
“Rough Mix”
“Annie “
“Keep Me Turning”
“Catmelody”

Side 2:

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Reveal Second Original Song “New Horizons” Feat. ELUVEITIE’s Fabienne Erni; Music Video

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Reveal Second Original Song “New Horizons” Feat. ELUVEITIE's Fabienne Erni; Music Video

Modern metal quartet, The Dark Side Of The Moon, have revealed the second original song of their catalog to date, the beautiful “New Horizons”, just in time for the release of their enchanting debut album, Metamorphosis, out tomorrow, May 12. In addition, the track release aligns with the band’s first live show ever, supporting Feuerschwanz and Warkings.

The Dark Side Of The Moon have already received impressive attention during their short existence, with the music video for the band’s first ever original song, “The Gates Of Time”, racking up 500k views on YouTube to date, and the cover of Game Of Thrones track “Jenny Of Oldstones”, as well as Lord of the Rings soundtrack song “May It Be”, gaining more than a million streams and video views combined.

On “New Horizons”, the four-piece consisting of highly skilled musicians from Feuerschwanz, Amaranthe and Ad Infinitum are joined by Fabienne Erni of Eluveitie. The phenomenal voices of Melissa Bonny and Fabienne Erni compliment each other, and the spectacular performance music video leads the listener into a dreamy fantasy world.

The Dark Side Of The Moon on “New Horizons”: “Finally, the time has come, we are about to release our debut album! And to celebrate this, there is a new video.. It’s the second self-written song you’ll hear from us, and as a guest we have the fantastic Fabienne Erni from Eluveitie – a very special honor for us!”

The Dark Side Of The Moon started with a bet between Ad Infinitum singer Melissa Bonny and Hans Platz, the guitarist of Feuerschwanz. Whoever lost owed the other a “dare”. Hans won and challenged Melissa to record a metal version of their latest released single “Jenny Of Oldstones”, and the rest is history!

Exploring the fantastical lives of famous pop culture heroes since their childhood, the multitalented musicians transform soundtracks of worldwide known movies, TV shows and video games into powerful metal tracks on the debut album Metamorphosis. The Dark Side Of The Moon don’t limit themselves to cover versions, but also include their own songs dedicated to their favorite warriors. Marching into the great worlds of The Lord of the Rings, the band paints the Grammy-nominated soundtrack “May It Be”, featuring Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain), in a new light, while the mystic song “Misty Mountains” (feat. Evergrey’s Tom S. Englund) of The Hobbit film trilogy underlines the tragic story through melodic folk vocal lines and rousing guitar riff choirs.

Like the seven untamed seas, the melodies appear in energetic and rousing waves, while others head towards the shore in an exciting, elegant and soulful rhythm. Exploring the untouched sides of these multifaceted selected songs, the multinational band shifts the world famous soundscapes into new adventures, taking listeners back to forgotten times. Just like the moon, every song has an unexplored side, now discovered by The Dark Side Of The Moon.

Metamorphosis will be available in the following formats:

– 1-CD Digisleeve in Cloth Bag (incl. Pendant, Leather Cord & Keyring , Patch, Signed Card) – limited to 300 copies worldwide (Napalm Records shop exclusive)

John 5 says Motley Crue’s new music is heavier than anything on Shout At The Devil

Motley Crue

(Image credit: Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

John 5 has offered an update on Motley Crue‘s forthcoming new material, revealing that what they’ve recorded so far is heavier than anything on their acclaimed second album, 1983’s Shout At The Devil.

While in a recent interview on Sirius XM’s Trunk Nation, the new Crue guitarist spoke of his experience of working alongside legendary producer Bob Rock, and also described what some of their “killer” new tracks sound like.

“Bob would come in and [say], ‘OK, let’s try this here, and that here and this here,’” 5 explains. “It was one of the most incredible experiences ever. … I’m thinking, ‘We’ve got so much great technology today’… but we got in that room and it was like being in a garage working on a song when you were in high school. … It was incredible, and we documented a lot of it too.”

Speaking of the tracks they’ve recorded so far, he continues, “The songs are fucking heavy. I sound like a little excited kid right now, but they’re heavy and they’re mean. I can’t wait for them to come out. I’m just so excited.”

Then, when Trunk asks John 5 whether the new offerings compare to Motley Crue’s platinum-selling breakthrough album, Shout At The Devil, he reveals that some of their new riffs are “heavier than anything” on it.

Of how the recording process is coming along, John 5 explains: “I don’t know if they’re completely done but I would say they’re like probably 98%. It has to be mixed; it has to be mastered. … All I can tell you is that it’s heavy and it’s aggressive, and I think people are going to dig it because, talking as a fan, it’s fucking badass.”

John 5 replaced Motley Crue’s longtime guitarist Mick Mars, after the latter axe-slinger stepped back from touring duties last year due to his ongoing battle with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).

Later this month, the band will resume their world tour with Def Leppard, with shows kicking off again on May 22 in Sheffield, UK.
